Upper Victoria Street, Youngtown

A street scene sketch done late yesterday afternoon on the way back from Bunnings.  It was still very hot, around 30 degrees.

View from Youngtown Regional Park

A small sketch I stopped to do while on a short afternoon walk the other day.

Through the Boatshed

Was going to start a painting of one of my other boat scenes when this view caught my eye.  I loved all the different angles and geometric shapes, so just had to have a go at it.

Angel Looking Down

Major computer problems have put me behind with work lately, but gradually getting back on track.  This is another study of my angel garden statue, from a tricky angle.  Back to the landscapes now.

Tamar Marine Boats & City

These boats and their reflections keep beckoning me to draw and paint them, so I do. :)  Time to pick up the brushes again and try some of these ideas in paint (will post those on my painting blog as I finish them).

From the Cataract Gorge Track

Couldn't resist this beautiful view of the Cataract Gorge here in Launceston.  It's my first drawing of the area since a high school trip back in 1988 with artist/teacher, George Richardson (1938-2005).  A walk through here always brings back memories of him and that trip.

Tamar Marine

I was asked to consider a painting of this scene so decided to start with a small drawing and see how all the shapes fit together to make an interesting composition.  After the detailed architecture I've been focusing on recently, I thought this would be a stroll in the park (or along the jetty in this case :), but it had its challenges too.  I'm happy with the way it turned out.

Spring in the Quadrant

Another view of The Quadrant in Launceston, this time from the Brisbane Street side.  I really enjoy drawing the old architecture in the afternoon light and "populating" the area with figures from different photos of the same scene.

The Quadrant (with a twist)

The lovely old architecture made this a fun and challenging scene to draw.  I took a number of photos in the area last week and used two as a reference for this.  No doubt there will be some further adjustments when I paint it...Those who know the area well will notice I've used artistic licence in a couple of places... :)

Tamar River Boats & Reflections

This is the scene I started sketching the other day but didn't finish.  I started afresh today, paying more attention to the reflections and movement of the water.  I'm happy with the way it turned out, especially the slightly different angles of the boats.  Looking forward to tackling these in oils soon.

Tamar River Boats

A great start to spring in this part of the world.   With such calm, sunny weather, it was a great opportunity to return to the boats and do a coloured pencil study on location.  I also started a black and white sketch from a different angle focusing mostly on the reflections, but a friendly chap came over to chat and by the time I got back to the sketch, the reflections had changed completely!

Tamar Marine Boats

Whenever I go into the city to draw, I tend to end up in this quiet area near the entrance to the Cataract Gorge.  I'm drawn to the shapes of the boats and the reflections in the water, which I'd like to paint sometime soon.

Japanese Doll

This beautiful doll was given to me many years ago by a lovely lady in Japan.  She takes pride of place on the shelf above my computer desk now and measures 19cm from top to bottom.  From this black and white drawing, it's not possible to appreciate the beautiful colours in her kimono, but I can tell you: violet, orange, cream, silver and gold.  Perhaps one day I'll paint her in full colour.

Angel Statue 3

She's a challenge, but I enjoy sketching this little statue.

Black Tea

A quick drawing to see how this cup would look in coloured pencil.  It's also in a painting I did not so long ago, which can be seen here on my painting blog.
